UNC Places Second At Maryland

College Park, Md. - North Carolina took second place Sunday in a tri-meet with Maryland and Bowling Green, moving to 7-1 on the season. The Heels posted a team total of 193.125, sandwiched between Maryland with 194.475 and Bowling Green with 191.500. Junior Elizabeth Durkac set two personal bests and took first in the all-around with a 39.150.
Coach Derek Galvin was happy with his team's performance. "Overall we had a stronger team performance than last week," he said. "The quality of routines was better and we didn't have as many falls."
The Heels competed on the balance beam first and took second place overall. Durkac and senior Morgan Evans each scored 9.800 and tied for third place. Seniors Zoya Johnson and Krista Jasper recorded scores of 9.675 and 9.525, respectively. Junior Maura Masatsugu received a 9.150.
UNC moved to floor exercise, where it dropped to third place. Durkac and sophomore Kristin Aloi tied for fifth place individually with a score of 9.775. Jasper was close behind with a 9.725. Senior Taylor Brown posted a 9.450 and Evans recorded 9.000.
The Heels competed next on the vault and finished at second place as a team. Johnson tied for second place individually with a 9.900, which ties her personal best score. Evans received a 9.800, and Durkac scored a 9.750, beating her personal best of 9.650. Brown scored a 9.675 and junior Michelle Ikoma, a 9.650.
Carolina finished on the uneven bars. Their best event of the day, the Heels took first place overall. Durkac and Evans tied for first place in the individual race at 9.825. Johnson was right behind in third place with a 9.750. Sophomores Acacia Cosentino and Emily Cornwell also received scored of 9.650 and 9.625, respectively.
Durkac won her first all-around title of her career with a score of 39.150, breaking her personal best of 38.575 recorded last week. Evans came in third all-around with a 38.425.
UNC's next meet is Friday, February 10 in a rematch with Maryland. The meet will be in Carmichael Arena at 7:00.
