Carolina Rallies Past Georgia Tech 3-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Senior Suzanne Haydel reeled in 15 digs and added 12 kills as North Carolina rallied past Georgia Tech 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-12) Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. Emily McGee and Cora Harms each posted double-doubles as UNC improves to 23-9 overall and 14-5 in the ACC.
Senior Christine Vaughen added 15 kills and two blocks. Courtney Johnston left the match in the first set with a left knee injury. The Tar Heels won their 14th match at home, the most since 2002, on senior day.
"I feel numb right now, it was a great comeback," exclaimed head coach Joe Sagula. "It is bittersweet with senior day and it was a very emotional match."
McGee notched her 11th double-double with a match-high 19 kills and 14 digs. Harms posted her team-leading 16th double-double with 48 assists and 20 digs. ACC leading libero Kaylie Gibson reeled in a match-best 28 digs.
"Kaylie Gibson and Cora Harms are the best athletes on the floor," added Sagula. "Those two are all over the place and a huge reason why our defense is so good."
The Yellow Jackets cranked a .294 hitting percentage to claim set one 25-20. The Tar Heels trailed by as many as six, but cut the lead late to three. McGee registered three kills to lead UNC, who was plagued by seven attack errors.
Georgia Tech used an 11-2 run early in the second set to win the frame 25-19. Carolina was again plagued by attack errors committing 10 in the second for a .038 hitting percentage. Henry provided a big boost off the bench with four kills.
McGee and Vaughen combined for 11 kills to lead UNC to a 25-23 set three win. The Tar Heels lead the entire frame to force a fourth frame. Haydel and McGee posted five digs apiece to anchor the UNC defense.
Haydel and McGee erupted for six kills apiece as Carolina claimed the fourth 25-19. Harms fueled the offense with 15 assists and four digs. Trailing 10-5, Haydel led the Tar Heels on an 8-2 run and UNC never looked back. The senior added six digs as Carolina forced a fifth and final set.
The Tar Heels finished off the fifth 15-12 to cap their come-from-behind 3-2 win. Gibson notched six digs in the final frame to lead UNC. Carolina trailed just once in the last two sets to claim the 3-2 match victory.
The win is Carolina's first 2-0 come-from-behind victory since September 11, 2009 against Oklahoma. The Tar Heels are 2-2 in five set matches this season.
The win secures a second place finish for North Carolina in the ACC at 14-5. Carolina concludes the 2010 regular season slate Friday, November 26 at noon against NC State from Carmichael.
