No. 15 Volleyball Sweeps Cal To Close Out West Coast Swing
November 9, 2025 | Volleyball
BERKELEY, CALIF. – No. 15 Carolina volleyball swept its way back into the win column with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-13) victory over Cal on Sunday afternoon.
The first set was all Tar Heels all the time. The 25-9 victory marks the largest set win of the year and the largest since beating Virginia 25-5 in the second set on Nov. 27, 2024. UNC hit a staggering .409 while limiting the Golden Bears to -0.031.
A milestone was also hit in the first set as Maddy May became just one of six Tar Heels to reach 1,500 digs. The senior has played ever single set of her four year career.
The second set was a lot closer, the Tar Heels trailed 12-8 before a 4-0 run tied things up at 12-12. With everything even at 14-14, UNC rattled off a 9-4 run to go up 23-18. Cal made a bit of a run late, but UNC held up to take it 25-23.
The third and final set was much like the first: all Tar Heels. In a close battle early on a 10-0 run doubled up the Golden Bears to go up a commanding 18-9. They were able to ride that momentum out to a 25-13 win.
Bridget Malone showed out with five kills on 10 swings in just the third set. Six Tar Heels amassed at least five kills with Chelsea Thorpe leading the way with seven. Laynie Smith and Lauren Schutter tallied six blocks apiece with Jackie Taylor not to far behind with five.
UNC returns home now to take on Virginia and Virginia Tech on Friday and Sunday on ACCNX.
