Haydel Leads UNC Over NC State 3-0

CHAPEL HILL -- Senior Suzanne Haydel uncorked 14 kills and 12 digs to lead North Carolina over NC State 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-23) Friday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. Emily McGee added 13 kills and 12 digs to improve UNC to 24-9 overall and 15-5 in the ACC.
Haydel led UNC with a match-best 14 kills en route to her tenth double-double of the season. Setter Cora Harms fueled the Carolina attack with 39 assists and 12 digs, good for her team-best 17th double-double.
"I am very proud of the way our team finished the season," head coach Joe Sagula said. "Suzanne Haydel was phenomenal and it was an important win for our team."
ACC Defensive Player of the Year Kaylie Gibson reeled in a match-high 24 digs. McGee registered her 13th double-double of 2010 with 13 kills and 12 digs. Senior Christine Vaughen chipped in a match-high eight blocks.
Haydel cranked eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage to lead Carolina to a 25-18 set one win. McGee was not far behind dropping five kills at a .556 clip. Haydel finished the first with eight kills, five digs and a solo block. UNC uncorked a .359 hitting percentage as a team to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Tar Heels battled to win the second frame 25-19 behind four McGee kills. UNC found offense from the middles as Vaughen registered three kills and three blocks. Freshman Kayla Berringer added three kills to push UNC in front 2-0.
Carolina roared out to an 11-4 lead in the third and never looked back to win set three 25-23 and the match 3-0. NC State battled back and tied the frame at 23, but a Wolfpack attack error and McGee kill sealed the victory. Haydel ripped six kills and Shelbey Bleke added four in the final frame.
The 24 regular-season wins are the most UNC has won since a 32-4 mark in 2002. Carolina improves to 15-2 at home the most wins at home since a perfect 18-0 mark in 2002.
Carolina will learn its NCAA Tournament fate Sunday at 3 p.m. as the selection show airs on ESPNEWS.
