CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Campbell answered game-tying rallies by No. 2 North Carolina with a run in the 10th inning and two in the 11th to earn a 7-5 upset victory Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels (32-7) outhit the Camels (8-31) by a 16-10 margin but left 14 men on base to fall for the second time in the last three games.
Second baseman Zach Johnson and center fielder Carlton Floyd each had three hits for Campbell and were responsible for driving in the game-winning runs in the 11th inning. With the game knotted at five, Johnson followed back-to-back walks by UNC's Tim Federowicz with an RBI single through the left side, and Floyd added a doubled to left for the seventh and final run.
The Tar Heels, who stranded a pair of base runners in the four of the final six innings, put two on in the bottom of the 11th but could not muster the big hit when they needed it and suffered their first midweek loss of the year. Ryan Hamme (3-1) earned the win for Campbell after allowing two runs on five hits over three innings of relief.
Federowicz (1-2) was one of three Tar Heels with four hits on the day but allowed two runs on two hits and two walks over the final 1 1/3 innings. At the plate, he was 4-for-6 with an RBI double.
First baseman Dustin Ackley and third baseman Chad Flack also added four hits. Flack, who homered for the second time in the last four games after hitting just one over his first 35 outings, matched his career high with the four hits, while Ackley tallied his fifth four-hit game of the season.
Down 4-1 through five innings, Carolina rallied to tie the game in the ninth and 10th innings, but Campbell had an answer on both occasions. The Tar Heels tied the game in the ninth on a triple by Ackley and a double by Federowicz. With one out, Ackley hit a ball to straightaway center field that Floyd managed to get a glove on but could not hang onto when he collided with the wall. Federowicz then doubled into the gap in left center to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
The Camels regained the lead in the 10th on an RBI single by Hamme. Johnson singled to start the rally and scored from second on a blooper into center by Hamme off lefty Matt Cox. The Tar Heels' Kyle Seager, who was 2-for-6, quickly tied the game once again with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning off Hamme. The Kannapolis native belted an 0-2 pitch to right to send the game to the 11th and final inning.
After throwing out the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the third, the Tar Heels quickly grabbed an early advantage on Flack's solo home run. He took a 1-0 pitch from Campbell starter Trevor Smith over the scoreboard in left center for a 1-0 UNC lead and his 31st career home run, just one shy of 10th all-time at Carolina.
Campbell took a 4-1 lead in the fifth on a three-run homer by Daniel Smith, his first of the season. Johnson tied the score with a two-out double over the head of left fielder Reid Fronk, and Smith followed a walk to Floyd with a home run down the right field line off lefty Rob Catapano to put the Tar Heels in a three-run hole.
UNC trimmed the lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth. After back-to-back singles from Ackley and Federowicz to open the inning, Josh Horton drove in the first run with an RBI grounder to first, and Drew Poulk followed with a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Federowicz and bring the Tar Heels within a single run.
Starter Mike Facchinei pitched well for the Tar Heels, allowing just four hits and two runs over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Rob Wooten was also sharp in relief, striking out five of the six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Tar Heels are back in league action this weekend with a three-game series at No. 1 Florida State beginning Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's game will be televised by Fox Sports Net South at 1 p.m.
