CHAPEL HILL -- Allison Higgins tallied five goals and two assists to lead the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team to a 12-5 victory over New Hampshire on Wednesday afternoon at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. Higgins' five goals and seven points both were career highs for the senior from Towson, Md. The game was played on the artificial turf at Henry Stadium due to driving rain showers in the Chapel Hill area throughout the day.
UNC (6-1, 1-0 ACC) is ranked No. 4 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll. New Hampshire (1-2) received votes in this week's IWLCA poll but is unranked.
Christina Juras and Nicki Barnes-Wagner both scored two goals in the winning effort for Carolina. The Tar Heels got single goals from Meg Freshwater (who also had an assist), Kelly Renzi and Jess Allen. Erica LaGrow had two assists for UNC. Jill Albee scored twice for New Hampshire.
In the first half, the Wildcats scored almost immediately, as Burnap scored just 0:42 into the game, driving down the middle of the field and scoring unassisted. The Tar Heels responded quickly, however. Allison Higgins scored twice and Christina Juras once in the next two minutes as Carolina retook the lead 3-1. LaGrow assisted on Higgins' first goal and Juras' score.
After Jill Albee scored to make it 3-2 UNC, the Tar Heels scored the last three goals of the first half to take a 6-2 lead into the break. The final three goals of the first half came from Meg Freshwater, Kelly Renzi and Nicki Barnes-Wagner on a free position shot.
The Wildcats cut the lead to 6-3 Tar Heels 90 seconds into the second half on an unassisted goal by Kristin Blanchette. The Tar Heels then responded with goals by Jess Allen and Juras (on a free-position opportunity). Laura Dosdell's free-position goal at the 49:16 mark made it 8-4 Carolina before UNC scored four straight goals (the last two by Higgins) to put the game out of reach.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday at noon vs. Virginia at Fetzer Field. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the UNC-Duke men's lacrosse game (2:30 p.m.). Due to the proximity of the two games, admission will be charged for both games. Gates will open at 11 a.m. Tickets will cost $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Each ticket will be good for both games.
