CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Amy Appelt scored three goals and added one assist while Tyler Leachman had two goals and one assist to lead defending NCAA champion Virginia to an 11-5 victory over fourth-ranked North Carolina in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The sixth-ranked Cavaliers improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC with the victory while Carolina saw its six-match winning streak broken as the Tar Heels fell to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Kelly Renzi led the Tar Heel offense with a pair of goals. The goalkeepers on both sides of the field were stellar as UNC's Kristen Hordy made 11 saves as did the starting keeper for the Cavaliers, Ginger Miles. Virginia jumped out to a 4-0 in the opening 14:29 of the match as four different Wahoo players dented the scoreboard. UNC rallied to cut the Virginia lead to 5-3 by halftime as Stephanie Scurachio, Kelly Renzi and Christina Juras found the back of the net for Carolina.
But Virginia came out and scored the first five goals of the second half to build its lead to an imposing 10-3 count. Leachman had her two goals in the five-goal run and Appelt added a goal and an assist as the Wahoos built a lead UNC could not overcome.
The Tar Heels will return to action when they play Ohio State on Friday, March 25 at 5 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
