
Carolina Defeats New Hampshire, 9-3

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 9 in the nation in this week's IWLCA poll, defeated the University of New Hampshire by a 9-3 score on Wednesday evening at a cold, wet Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. Brooke Dieringer had two goals and an assist for the Tar Heels in the victory. Rachel Szakmary and Nicki Barnes each also added two goals for UNC.
With the victory, UNC improves to 3-3 this season. UNH fell to 0-6 with the loss.
The the score was 4-2 at halftime and was close until midway through the second half, when the Tar Heels scored five unanswered goals in a span of under 12 minutes to open up a 9-2 lead.
During that crucial stretch, senior Lynne Quattrone got the scoring started with a free position goal at the 45:05 mark that made it 5-2 UNC. Allison Higgins and Dieringer then followed with unassisted goals to make it 7-2. Higgins scored again off a Dieringer assist at the 52:54 mark to make it 8-2, and Barnes closed out the UNC scoring when she took a pass from Lindsey Stover and scored with under five minutes to play.
Jessie Groszkowski scored a late goal for New Hampshire to cut it to 9-3, but it was too little, too late.
Carolina out-shot New Hampshire, 31-9, and had a 49-20 edge in ground balls.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup against Virginia at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.
