CHAPEL HILL - The University of Virginia women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 4 in the nation in this week's IWLCA poll, defeated No. 9 University of North Carolina by a 7-6 score on a warm, sunny Saturday afternoon at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Caitlin Banks had two goals to lead a balanced attack for the Cavaliers in the victory. Freshman Stephanie Scurachio, who had three goals on the season entering the game, scored a season-high three goals for Carolina.
With the loss, UNC falls to 3-4, 0-3 in the ACC this season. UVa improves to 6-2, 1-1 ACC with the win.
The the score was tied 3-3 at halftime. Virginia grabbed a 1-0 lead when Amy Appelt scored just over 10 minutes into the game. The Tar Heels responded with two straight goals, one by Beth Ames and one by Scurachio. Tyler Leachman scored for UVa to tie it at 2-2 with under five minutes to play in the first half, before the Tar Heels' Allison Higgins scored on a free position shot at 27:55 to make it 3-2 UNC before Lauren Aumiller scored with just 0:02 left in the first half to knot it at 3-3 at the break.
In the second half, the Cavaliers got off to a quick start, scoring three goals in the first six minutes to grab a 6-3 lead. Carolina scored two of the next three goals in the game, both by Scurachio, to cut the lead to 7-5 with just under nine minutes to play.
Tar Heel junior Brooke Young scored a big goal at the 57:59 mark to cut it to 7-6. Carolina had the ball in the final minute with a chance to tie but turned the ball over. The Cavaliers ran out the clock to clinch the win.
The Tar Heels will return to action next weekend at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Columbus, Ohio. Carolina will face Ohio State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Penn State on Sunday at noon.
