Coastal Carolina Ousts Tar Heels From NCAA Tourney, 3-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - ig South champion Coastal Carolina (20-2) scored in the first 10 minutes of the match and added a pair of second half goals to defeat No. 4-seed North Carolina (12-4-4) by a 3-0 margin in NCAA Tournament Second Round action Wednesday at Fetzer Field. With the victory, the Chanticleers, winners of 13 straight games, advance to the third round of the tourney against either Santa Clara or No. 13-seed Loyola Marymount.
The loss was the third in its last five matches and ends the season for Carolina, who scored just one goal over this season-ending stretch. The defeat was first for the Tar Heels at Fetzer Field in NCAA Tournament play since a 1-0 loss to Indiana in the 2000 quarterfinals.
Mubarike Chisoni gave the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute on a 30-yard shot into the upper left corner of the net past Tar Heel goalkeeper Justin Hughes, who made a leaping attempt at the save. The goal was Chisoni's seventh of the season, and Itayi Pondwa picked up an assist on the play.
CCU continued to pressure Carolina throughout the first half, outshooting the Tar Heels, 7-5, in the opening frame. UNC had a pair of scoring chances from forward Marcus Storey come up short in the first four minutes of the match.
Coastal's Joseph Ngwenya, the nation's leading scorer, pushed the lead to 2-0 off a header at the 62:24 mark of the second half. The goal was his 19th of the season and came off an assist from Boyzzz Khumalo, who served the ball into the box from the left flank.
The Chanticleers put the match away with a goal from Jordie Hughes in the 82nd minute of play.
The Tar Heels had several opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the second half but were unable to convert. Carolina held the edge in shots, 7-5 in the second frame. Both teams had 12 shots for the match.
In goal, Hughes made five saves, while CCU's Andrew Paxton made three stops.
