Tar Heels Defeat Mercer, 5-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. - In the opening game of the adidas/Spartan Classic, North Carolina blanked Mercer, 5-0. Five different Tar Heels scored in the win, with freshman Jamie Watson leading the way with a goal and two assists. Junior Marcus Storey added a goal and an assist.
Michael Harrington got the Tar Heels rolling when his blast from the right side bounced in off the crossbar at the 11:56 mark. Carolina's second and third goals of the evening came thanks to the duo of Watson and Storey. In the 56th minute, Watson capitalized on a one-timer from Storey from the right side. Just 20 seconds later, Storey took a pass from Watson on the right side and buried his shot on a one-timer. Wes Shull and Corey Ashe each added goals in the closing minutes of the contest.
The 2003 adidas/Spartan Classic will reconvene Sunday, October 12. North Carolina will take on Kentucky at 1 pm, and UNC Greensboro will square off against Mercer at 3:30 pm. Kentucky defeated UNCG, 3-1, to snap the Spartan's 12-game home unbeaten streak.
