GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Ray Fumo converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute to lead the No. 3 North Carolina men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Kentucky Sunday at UNC Greensboro's adidas/Spartan Classic. With the victory, the Tar Heels remain unbeaten in their last six games and improve to 10-1-2 on the season.
Fumo's game-winner at 74:03 was his second goal of the season and first on a penalty kick. He is now 1-of-2 on penalty kicks this season, and the score was his first game-winning goal this year. Nine different Tar Heels have netted game-winners on the season.
After a scoreless first half, junior defender Tim Merritt got the Tar Heels on the board with a goal from 10 yards out in the 59th minute. The score was Merritt's third of the year. With Fumo and Merritt's goals, seven different Tar Heels scored in the two wins at the adidas/Spartan Classic. Five different UNC players found the back of the net in Friday's 5-0 win over Mercer. Freshman Jamie Watson led the way with a goal and two assists against the Bears.
Sunday's 1-0 lead was short lived as the Wildcats' Olli Lehtimaki scored on a header just three minutes after Merritt's goal. The Kentucky goal was the first allowed by the Tar Heels since the 3-2 double-overtime win over Duke on Sept. 24 and snapped a string of four consecutive shutouts by Carolina.
Freshman Justin Hughes went the distance in goal for the Tar Heels and made three saves. Kentucky's Andy Gruenebaum made four saves. Carolina outshot the Wildcats, 14-6
Carolina returns to action next Sunday at NC State at 2 p.m.
