CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's soccer team defeated Denver 1-0 in the second game of the Nike Carolina Classic Friday night at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
Chris Carrieri scored the game's only goal off assists from Logan Pause and Naz Yamauchi at the 11:53 mark. After receiving a pass from Yamauchi, Pause lofted a perfect pass to Carrieri in the box who hit a header past Denver goalie Parker Jarvis.
Carrieri's goal proved to be the game winner for UNC as neither team was able to score over the last 78:07 of the match. Carolina out shot the Pioneers 18-5 in notching the victory.
The Tar Heels improve to 5-1 on the season, and the Pioneers fall to 1-2.
In the first game of the day, UNC Greensboro defeated Kentucky 2-1.
The Nike Carolina Classic continues Saturday as UNC Greensboro faces Denver at 5:00 p.m., followed by the UNC and Kentucky at 7:30 p.m.
