UNC Greensboro rallied past Denver and North Carolina held on to beat Kentucky for its fifth victory in a row in Saturday night action at the Nike Carolina Classic before 1,197 fans at Fetzer Field. In the opener, UNC Greensboro rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Pioneers, evening the Spartans' record at 3-3 on the season. Denver fell to 3-4 with the loss. In the second game, UNC scored a pair of second-half goals to go ahead 2-0 and then the Tar Heels held on against a last-minute flurry by the Wildcats. The win boosted Carolina to 6-1 on the season while Kentucky lost its fourth in a row, falling to 2-4.
Alejandro Moreno earned Most Valuable Player honors in the Tournament for champion UNC Greensboro, which earned the title on total goals. Both UNCG and Carolina went 2-0 in the tournament and both had a goal differential of plus two. UNCG then won the tournament title based on total goals (4 to UNC's 3). The All-Tournament Team included Moreno, along with Jimmy Craven, Justin Wisdo and Svafnir Gislason of the Spartans, Eddie Robinson, Chris Leitch and Chris Carrieri of the Tar Heels, Michael Piserchio and Scott Dixon of Denver, and J.D. Stephenson and Thomas Graham of Kentucky.
In Saturday's nightcap, Carolina dominated the play, outshooting Kentucky 15-7. But the Tar Heels did not break through until the 60th minute when junior midfielder Noz Yamauchi finished off a nifty counter attack to give the Tar Heels the lead. He was assisted on the play by freshman striker Sean McGinty and junior defender Danny Jackson. A little over 15 minutes later, the Tar Heels extended their lead when junior forward Chris Carrieri scored his second game-winning goal in two nights, taking passes from McGinty and freshman midfielder Logan Pause to finish off a breakaway.
Less than two minutes after Carrieri scored, the Wildcats' Kevin Strobo received a red card for a hard tackle on Jackson and the Tar Heels seemed in the driver's seat with less than 14 minutes to play. But the Wildcats scored with 44 seconds remaining when Graham sent a ball from nearly midfield after a Carolina foul that flicked off the head of Giovanni Fernandes in the box for a UK goal. With 16 seconds left, UNC's Michael Bucy received a yellow card for a tackle just outside the Tar Heel box. On the restart, there was a flurry which resulted in a shot by Chris McDaniel from the six. The chance was saved on the line by Bucy with six seconds remaining and the Tar Heels cleared the ball out to preserve the win.
In the opener, Denver went up 1-0 just three minutes into the match when Piserchio scored from 10 yards out, caroming in the chance off the right post. He was assisted on the play by Matt Harrell. That lead held up until UNCG scored in the 58th minute when midfielder Chris Goos took a pass from Moreno and scored from 12 yards out into an empty net. The game-winner for the Spartans came at the 71:10 mark when Mike Hemphill took a feed from Robert Te Winekl and rammed a hard shot home >from eight yards out into the back of the netting.
The Tar Heels will take eight days off until they play host to the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, September 24 at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
