CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina Women's Lacrosse team suffered its first home loss of the season, falling to #3 Duke, 8-7. Despite a late second half rally sparked by Betsy Gaines' two goals and an assist, the Tar Heels were unable to overcome a four-goal deficit. The lue Devils were led by Kate Kiser's hat trick, as well as a pair of key goals by Kelly Dirks.
North Carolina was anchored by three-goal games from both Meghann Mohler and Gaines. Amy Havrilla also added a score for the Tar Heels, who put 23 shots on goal. Duke was hindered by 16 turnovers and 15 fouls, but were saved by goalkeeper Shannon Chaney, who stopped 12 Tar Heel shots. The Blue Devils collected 32 ground balls, compared to the Tar Heels 25. Duke also led North Carolina in caused turnovers, 11-9.
The loss drops the Tar Heels to 6-3 on the season, and 2-1 in the ACC. Duke's overall record stands at 6-2 on the year and 1-1 in the conference. The Tar Heels continue their season Sunday, facing Virginia Tech at 1:00 pm at Fetzer Field.
