BALTIMORE, Md. - Playing their third successive road game, the fourth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels jetted to a 6-1 halftime lead and then cruised to a surprisingly easy 13-6 victory over sixth-ranked Loyola before a crowd of 526 Friday afternoon in women's lacrosse action at Curley Field.
North Carolina was led offensively by junior midfielder Meghann Mohler and freshman midfielder Christine McPike, each of whom scored three goals to help Coach Jenny Slingluff Levy's team even its 1999 record at 2-2. The Tar Heel defense was dominant in the first half, holding the Greyhounds scoreless for the first 18:01 of the match while UNC ran off the first five goals of the match.
McPike scored the first Tar Heel goal just 3:46 into the game and she scored another on a free position shot 2:10 before halftime to stake the Heels to a 6-1 lead at intermission. Junior midfielder Gray MacNair had scored with 13:53 left in the first half to extend the Carolina lead to 5-0 before Loyola sophomore Danielle Battersby tallied the first Greyhound goal with 11:59 remaining in the half.
Loyola, which was opening its season, cut the lead to 7-3 early the second half, but could get no closer. Mohler had two of her three assists in the second half while junior attacker Kristin Off had two goals and two assists in the second period.
Greyhounds Kathleen O'Shea and Stacey Morlang each scored twice in the second half for Loyola who lost to Carolina for the second successive season. UNC sophomore Amy Havrilla also totaled two goals for the Heels.
