Heels Stretch Winning Streak To Eleven

Chapel Hill, N.C. --Kyle Snyder (4-0) allowed one run and struck out five to win his fourth consecutive start as the University of North Carolina defeated Liberty, 13-1, Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Snyder allowed six hits in 8.0 innings while walking two to pick up the victory.
Jay Madeira went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and three RBI and Jarrett Shearin went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead a 16-hit Tar Heel attack. Dan Moylan, Chris LaMarsh, Tyrell Godwin and Ryan Earey all also had two hits for UNC. Chad Bryan went 2-for-2 and Steve Baker homered for Liberty.
The win improved the fifth-ranked Tar Heels to 11-0 on the season, the best start in school history. Kurt Reese (0-1) took the loss as Liberty fell to 2-1.
The Tar Heels got on the board in the bottom of the first when Moylan singled, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Shearin.
Liberty tied the score in the top of the second on a solo home run by Baker, his first of the year. Carolina took a 3-1 lead in the second on a two-run home run by Madeira, his first of 1999. The Tar Heels added three runs in the third on RBI singles by Godwin and Matt McCay and a sacrifice fly by Earey.
Carolina added an insurance run in the sixth when Madeira led off with a single to centerfield. The Tar Heels loaded the bases when Moylan walked and Clay Hooper was hit by a pitch. Madeira then scored on a bases-loaded walk by LaMarsh.
UNC added four more runs in the seventh on four consecutive singles by Godwin, Earey, Ryan Mathews and Madeira, a sacrifice fly by Rob Miano and an RBI groundout by Moylan.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Boshamer Stadium versus Old Dominion.
