CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The gray skies and frigid weather set the tone for the 13th ranked University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team as 20th ranked Penn rolled into Chapel Hill and upset the Heels 14-7.
There was a cloud looming over the Tar Heels from the first quarter of the game as Penn claimed an early 4-1 lead. Quaker senior midfielder Jeff Zuckerman ended the quarter with a bang scoring an unassisted goal with eight seconds left.
The Heels rallied in the second period to come within one goal, led by goals from Jeff Sonke and Matt Crofton. Unfortunately for the Heels, Penn's offense continued to dominate in the second as the Quakers put three more goals on the board. After the half, Quaker sophomore Todd Minerley added his second goal of the game at the 2:49 mark. Tar Heel junior Chase Martin answered the call to action scoring two goals of his own in the third to close the gap to 6-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
Penn never backed down in the final quarter fueled by two goals from Zuckerman and two goals from junior Peter Janney. Carolina sophomore Jeff Sonke had the final goal of the game scoring at the 12:49 mark to up the Heels total to seven goals, not enough to overcome the Quaker's 14 goals.
On the Tar Heel side, Sonke was the high scorer finishing with two goals and two assists. Janney led the way for Penn totaling four goals while teammate Zuckerman finished with three goals and one assist.
Tar Heel senior goalkeeper Jarron Harkness finished the evening with seven saves and Penn senior goalkeeper Matt Schroeder had 16.
The Heels are in action this weekend as the squad makes its first trip ever West of the Mississippi River to play Air Force Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and the University of Denver Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Heels then return home March 20 when they face the defending national champions, Princeton.
