DURHAM, N.C. ---- Junior attackman Chase Martin set the pace for the North Carolina Tar Heels (6-5, 1-2 ACC) as 15th-ranked UNC pulled off an upset over second-ranked Duke (9-1, 1-1 ACC) in Durham on Wednesday night. The victory marked Carolinas first ACC win in 11 tries, while also stopping Dukes school-record winning streak at nine games.
Martin put the Heels on the board early, scoring UNCs first two goals, both in the first quarter, then providing the assist on the third goal, a Matt Crofton shot at the 13:05 mark of the second period. Carolina held the Duke offense scoreless the entire first half, while putting five goals of their own on the board. It was the first time this year the Blue Devils have gone scoreless in the first half of play.
Duke chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter, scoring four unanswered goals in a nine-and-a-half minute span to pull within one, 5-4. After trading goals, the teams four themselves deadlocked at six goals apiece with two minutes remaining in the third period. Once again, Martin provided the spark for the Tar Heels, scoring a goal on a an assist from Ryan Beard. Duke junior Jared Frood kept the Blue Devil effort alive, scoring two goals in the fourth, but a pair of goals by UNCs Jeff Sonke kept the lead just out of reach for Duke. Junior Nick Hartofilis helped Duke pull to within one with 2:14 remaining. Offsetting penalties gave Duke the ball back at midfield with seven seconds, remaining, but the Blue Devils were unable to convert, giving UNC a 10-9 victory.
Martin led all scorers with four points on three goals and one assist. In the last two games, he scored six goals, half of his offensive total for the season thus far. Dukes leading scorer for the season, Frood, led the Blue Devil effort with three goals. UNC goalkeeper Jarron Harkness recorded 14 saves, while Dukes Matt Breslin recorded a season-high 21 saves in the cage.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tar Heels, and was their first win over Duke since an 18-8 win in the 1996 ACC Tournament. It is their second win over a top 10 team this season, as they defeated Princeton by the same score on March 20.
The Blue Devil men remain at home, hosting another ACC rival, Virginia, in a 2:00 p.m. matchup on Sunday, April 18. North Carolina heads out on a two-game road, taking on UMBC Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Delaware Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
