Men's Lacrosse Tops Hofstra in Season Opening Scrimmage

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team defeated Hofstra University in a pre-season scrimmage 14-12 Sunday afternoon at Navy field in Chapel Hill.
The game was an even battle throughout between the pre-season ninth-ranked Tar Heels and the tenth-ranked Flying Dutchmen. No team led by more than two goals and the lead changed hands eight times before UNC sealed the victory late in the fourth period on an unassisted Jeremy Carey goal that gave the Tar Heels a 14-11 lead. Hofstra went on to score one final goal with 3:15 left in the period, but the effort was not enough to overcome Carolina as the Heels held on to the 14-12 victory.
Tar Heel Junior Matt Crofton had an outstanding game for the Tar Heels as he scored four goals and finished with two assists. Senior Jeremy Carey also finished the day with six points adding three goals and three assists.
Freshman Pat Jackson had a strong showing in his competitive debut for the Heels totaling three goals. The lead was ultimately saved by strong net play from freshman goaltender Kris Blindenbacher who had eight saves in the fourth period alone.
Hofstra kept the game close by scoring two late-quarter goals. The first came with 11 seconds left in the second quarter which closed Carolina's 6-4 lead to one goal just before the half. The second came in the third quarter with three seconds left as Dutchman Mike Laurano's unassisted goal gave Hofstra the 9-8 lead at the end of the third.
The Heels will compete in another pre-season scrimmage Sunday at 2:00 against Notre Dame That game will be played at Navy field and admission is free.
