COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland men's lacrosse team blitzed 11th-ranked North Carolina 5-0 in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon to secure a 13-7 victory over the Tar Heels before a crowd of 1,453 fans at Byrd Stadium. The Terrapins improved to 6-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Tar Heels saw their three-game winning streak ended, falling to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.
Maryland led for virtually the entire game with the score being tied only one time at 1-1 3:56 into the first quarter but it took until the fourth quarter for the Terps to finally shake the stubborn Tar Heels. But Maryland put five scores on the board in the final period, all by different players to score their fourth successive victory since a 2-1 start to its season.
Carolina was led by senior midfielder Justin Bowman who scored three of the Tar Heels' seven goals. Junior attackman Matt Crofton had three points for the Tar Heels with one goal and two assists and sophomore attackman Jeff Sonke had one goal and one assist for the Heels.
Maryland was led by Marcus LaChapelle with three goals and two assists, Chris Malone with two goals and two assists and Scott Hochstadt with three goals.
It was an unassisted goal by Maryland's Nate Watkins with 8:33 left in the first quarter that put the Terrapins ahead for good in the game. But UNC never went away, trailing 4-3 at the half. The Terps scored the first three goals of the third quarter but successive tallies by Bowman, Crofton and junior Kevin Mehm pulled the Tar Heels back with one goal with 8:32 remaining in the third quarter. LaChappelle lengethened the Terps' lead to two goals by scoring with 4:39 left in the third quarter but Carolina's Sonke tallied with 1:52 left in the quarter to cut the Maryland lead to 8-7.
But just like in last year's ACC Tournament semifinal game the fourth quarter belonged to Maryland and the Terps ran off five unanswered goals to seal the victory.
Although Carolina had more shots than Maryland, 35-27, the Terrrapins were much more opportunistic. UNC goalie Jarron Harkness made eight saves while allowing 13 goals. His counterpart for Maryland, Kevin Healey, faced 20 shots on goal, making 13 saves and allowing seven goals.
Maryland dominated the faceoffs 13-9 and the ground balls 52-34 and those two statistical areas led to Carolina's downfall.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Saturday at 2 p.m. when they play host to third-ranked Johns Hopkins at Fetzer Field.
