Marcus will be playing both midfield and attack for us this year. Coming off an ACC Rookie of the Year as an attackman his freshman year he made All-American as a middie as a sophomore. The versatility to play both positions is a big plus for us.
He's one of those guys that's just the heart and soul of the team.
He was voted captain as a junior, which is rare. For him to have the respect of his teammates and peers is tremendous. I think his energy spills off into the team and they follow how hard he works.
General: Tri-captain of the 2012 Tar Heels...Face-off Yearbook third-team preseason All-America selection heading into the 2012 campaign.
Junior (2012): Earned Dean's List honors in fall semester 2011.
Sophomore (2011): Won the Turnbull Trophy as Carolina's most valuable player...earned honorable mention All-America honors from the USILA in 2011...played in 14 games, missing games against Presbyterian and Maryland because of an injury...started 12 games as an attackman/midfielder...was the team's fourth-leading scorer with 28 points...ranked third on the team in goals scored with 23...led the Tar Heels with eight man up goals...scored on 34.8 percent of his shots...had eight games with two or more goals...opened the season with a hat trick against Robert Morris...exploded for four goals against UMBC, matching his career high....had three goals and an assist versus Penn and three days later scored two goals and added an assist at Princeton...all three goals versus the Quakers were man up tallies...had a pair of goals against Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins...helped lead the Tar Heels to an overtime win against Notre Dame with a hat trick...Carolina Leadership Academy Rising Star.
Freshman (2010): Had a brilliant rookie campaign...was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, the first Tar Heel player to win the award since 1998...won the Jay Gallagher Award as the outstanding freshman on UNC's team...started eight of 16 games...finished with 22 goals and nine assists for 31 points...scored on 42.3 percent of his shots...had the game-winning goal against Maryland...finished with three man-up goals and had 28 ground balls...tied for fourth on the team in goals scored and was fifth in points...best game of his freshman year came in the 9-7 win over Maryland...scored four goals (on only five shots) and added an assist in the game...won ACC Player of the Week honors March 29 and was also the Inside Lacrosse Nike Player of the Week based on that performance...also had five points in the wild win over Robert Morris, scoring twice and adding three assists...had a season-high four ground balls against the Colonials...had four goals on seven shots in the 11-4 win over Navy...had three goals and an assist in the 14-13 NCAA Tournament first round win against Delaware...scored twice against Jacksonville in the first game of his career...scored an extra-man goal which put the Tar Heels up for good in the 13-7 win over Duke...had four other matches in which he had a goal and an assist...member of ACC Academic Honor Roll for 2009-10.
Prep: Graduated in 2009 from the Gilman School in Baltimore, Md. ...was coached in lacrosse there by Tar Heel alumnus Brooks Matthews...won the Tyler Campbell Memorial Award as the lacrosse team's MVP his senior year...selected to play in the 2009 Under Armour All-America game...a U.S. Lacrosse high school All-America selection...was the captain of the Gilman lacrosse and football teams his senior year...led the Gilman squad to a 13-7 win over Calvert Hall for the 2009 MIAA championship...Gilman was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse in 2009...played on teams which went a combined 33-2 his junior and senior years...lists beating DeMatha Catholic 21-14 in football his senior year and leading a huge comeback win versus LaSalle in overtime as among his biggest sports thrills...played for Baltimore Crabs in summer 2009 when they won the Vail U19 championship.

Personal: Marcus Robert Holman was born May 2, 1991 in Baltimore, Md. ...he is the son of Brian and Laurie Holman...his father is an assistant coach for the Tar Heels who was a goalkeeper at Johns Hopkins from 1980-83...his father was a member of the 1980 NCAA title team at Hopkins...his mother Laurie played lacrosse at Towson...has a brother, Matthew, 22, who is a senior goalkeeper for the Tar Heels and a younger sister who is a terrific high school lacrosse and field hockey player at East Chapel Hill High School...communication studies major.

Section #1 (Lacrosse Related)
1. The best thing about being a Tar Heel lacrosse player is the family atmosphere and competing each year to win an ACC and national championship.
2. My favorite thing about competing for Coach Breschi is his balance of being a great coach on the field and someone you can talk to off the field.
3. Since last year the aspect of my training I've worked on the most is my footwork.
4. My best friend on another college lacrosse team is Cooper Brown (Washington and Lee).
5. My greatest strength as a lacrosse player is my determination.
Section #2 (Marcus' Interests)
1. Away from the lacrosse field and academic pursuits I like to spend time listening to music and hanging with my teammates.
2. The best movie I've seen recently is The Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
3. If I could compete in another sport at UNC it would be javelin throwing.
4. The music act I'd most like to see in person is Jersey Boys (I already have seen it and I highly recommend it).
5. The personal interest I have that might surprise my teammates is I chew gums for hours at a time.
Section #3 (Food and Beverage)
1. After a game at Fetzer Field, I'd like to see a tailgate spread that included those amazing chicken tenders, quesadillas, [B]Ski's and cookies.
2. My favorite beverage is SoBe Lifewater.
3. My favorite food made by a relative is my dad's steaks.
4. My favorite place to eat in Chapel Hill is anywhere on Franklin Street.
5. My favorite guilty pleasure food wise is my Aunt Sherry's homemade hot fudge with ice cream and brownies.

1. If I possessed the gift of time travel I'd like to go to the future when we finally discover aliens in outer space.
2. My most prized personal possession is my laptop.
3. If I could go to dinner with a famous person it would be Deion Sanders.
4. My dream job is owning a restaurant in the Bahamas and teaching kids how to play lacrosse there.
5. The most interesting person I've met at UNC is Kieran McDonald because he has so many nicknames.
