Carson Bertagnole and Grant Roscich both shot 3-under-par 67s Tuesday to lead the University of North Carolina men's golf to a third-place finish in the season-opening Visit Knoxville Collegiate at Fox Den Country Club in Farragut, Tenn.
The Tar Heels used a 6-under-par final round, the second-best of the day, to climb two spots into a tie for third at 9-under 831.
Host Tennessee carded a 14-under 266 over the final 18 holes to finish 15 under and take the team title by four strokes over Memphis. Carolina and Chattanooga tied for third, six behind the champion Volunteers. Vanderbilt was fifth at 8 under par.
Bertagnole had rounds of 66-69-67 for 8-under 202 to finish third, two strokes behind the individual champion Evan Rogers of Chattanooga (10-under 201). Rudy Sautron of Tennessee was second at 9-under 201.
It was the first time Bertagnole shot all three rounds in the 60s in a college tournament and his 202 finish was his low 54-hole stroke total as a Tar Heel.
Roscich (70-69-67) shot par or better in all three rounds and tied for seventh at 4-under 206.
Misha Golod (69-71-70, even-par 210) and freshman Asher Vargas (73-70-70, 3-over 213) both shot even par in the final round.
The Tar Heels return to competition September 12-13 in Sammamish, Wash., in the Sahalee Players Championship.
