Round Of The Day Leads UNC To 4th-Place Finish At Fighting Irish Classic

Carson Bertagnole and Niall Sheils Donegan shot under par in the third round to finish in the top eight and lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to a fourth-place finish in the Fighting Irish Classic Monday at Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course.

The Tar Heels climbed two spots in the field by shooting the only sub-par round on Monday among the 14 teams in the field. Carolina shot 2-under 278 today to move from sixth to fourth place.

Cal won the team title at 1-over-par 841, a single stroke better than runner-up Texas A&M. The Irish were third at 3 over par, Carolina was fourth at 6-over 846 and Georgia Southern placed fifth two shots in back of UNC.

Bertagnole, the individual champion last year, placed fourth with rounds of 68-69-69 for a total of 4-under 206. It was his second top-five finish of the season and fifth as a Tar Heel. He was one of only two players in the tournament to shoot below par in all three rounds. The other was the medalist, Texas A&M's Wheaton Ennis, who carded rounds of 67-69-67 for a winning score of 7-under 203.

Sheils Donegan (68-73-68) tied for eighth at 1-under 209 to record his second top 10 in as many starts this fall.

Bertagnole and Sheils Donegan posted two of only 16 rounds better than par Monday in the 81-player field.

Freshman Preston Hage (72-66-74) tied for 21st as an individual, Coltrane Mittag (74-69-71) tied for 27th at 4-over 214, and Misha Golod (71-74-72 as an individual) and Grant Roscich (76-71-70) tied for 39th at 7-over 217.

Carolina competes once more as a team in the fall October 18-20 at the Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.
