Devey Records Hat Trick, Tar Heels Shut Out Quinnipiac, 8-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 8 Carolina women's soccer hosted Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon where the Tar Heels picked up a dominant 8-0 win.
The UNC offense put together another impressive performance with five different Tar Heels contributing to the team's eight goals.
Bella Devey led the way for Carolina with a hat trick in the first half. The sophomore's performance marked the first time since 2021 that a Tar Heel recorded three goals in a match. Devey has now recorded five goals in just the first two matches of the season, tying her total number of goals from last season.
Another standout performance for UNC came from Summer Denigan. She recorded her first goal and brace in Carolina blue Sunday afternoon. The graduate transfer also dished out two assists.
How it Happened
Carolina had two early chances to score but just missed the mark. Staying on the attack, Hope Munson found Bella Devey in front of the 6-yard box to net the first goal of the day in the ninth minute.
Just two minutes later, Summer Denigan dished the ball to Munson who blasted a shot to the upper right corner of the goal. The defender's goal extended the Tar Heels' lead to 2-0.
UNC continued to pour it on as Devey netted her second goal of the day in the 13th minute off a header. The goal marked Devey's second straight brace this season.
Devey continued to set the tone on the offensive end as she added her third goal of the match less than one minute later. Scottie Antonucci found the striker sprinting full speed ahead inside the 18-yard box. Despite the Quinnipiac goalkeeper attempting to make a play, Devey slipped the ball past her to secure the goal.
Quinnipiac was able to slow the Carolina offense down just enough to prevent another goal in the first half. The Tar Heels headed into the break up 4-0.
In the 54th minute of play, Munson played a cross to Lilliah Blum at the left corner of the 6-yard box. Blum took a couple touches to line up her shot and then recorded her first goal as a Tar Heel. The senior's goal put Carolina ahead by five early in the second half.
A foul on the Bobcats in the 66th minute resulted in a penalty kick for UNC. Denigan stepped up to take the PK, but the Quinnipiac goalkeeper made a diving save to prevent the goal. Despite the initial save, the ball bounced back eventually finding the right foot of Denigan to net Carolina's sixth goal of the day. Her goal marked the first of her career here in Chapel Hill.
The Bobcats got their best look of the day in the 70th minute. Tatum O'Brien's shot nearly missed the goal after hitting the top right cross bar keeping Quinnipiac scoreless.
Denigan later found the ball inside the 18-yard box where she drilled a shot right past the keeper. The goal extended the Tar Heels' lead to 7-0 while giving Denigan a brace on the score sheet.
Following the previous goal, the match entered a weather delay. The teams would return to the pitch an hour later.
UNC picked up right where they left off after the delay. The Tar Heels worked to maintain possession and eventually Logan Tongberg found her opportunity to score. Her long ball secured the eighth goal of the game for Carolina while marking the first of her career.
The Tar Heels went on to claim their second straight shutout of the season, 8-0.
