Sheils Donegan Makes Eight Straight Birdies, Shoots 62
March 24, 2026 | Men's Golf
North Carolina's Niall Sheils Donegan birdied eight consecutive holes and went on to shoot 9-under-par 62 Tuesday to lead the Tar Heels to the fourth-best round of the day and an eighth-place finish in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
The 62 was Sheils Donegan's lowest-ever competitive round, and it equaled the third-best 18-hole score ever by a Tar Heel. His previous low round was 64 twice – in Bend, Ore., in a United States Amateur qualifier, and last year while playing for Northwestern on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.
The junior from Mill Valley, Calif., tied for 10th place with rounds of 69-72-62 for 10-under 203, also career bests for Sheils Donegan.
He began his round on the 16th hole and was 1 under par with three birdies and a pair of bogeys through his first 10 holes. He then made birdies on 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 to become the first Tar Heel to make eight consecutive birdies since David Ford at Seminole Golf Club in 2022.
The Tar Heels climbed six spots during the final round to finish eighth in the 16-team field, beating Houston, Duke, Wake Forest, Pepperdine, USC, Arizona State, Rice and Augusta.
Carolina carded rounds of 2-under 284, 4-under 280 and 13-under 271 for 19-under 833. Tuesday's 271 was UNC's second-best round of the season.
Texas Tech won the team title at 45-under 807, six shots better than Auburn and 11 ahead of Texas.
Florida State's Tyler Weaver (65-66-67) was the medalist at 15-under 198, defeating Oklahoma's Ryder Cowan in a one-hole playoff.
Carolina's Sihan Sandhu (72-65-70) tied for 23rd place at 6-under 207. Grant Roscich shot par or better in all three rounds (71-68-71) to share 34th place with Andrew Riley (66-70-74) at 3-under 210, and Carson Bertagnole shot 3-under 68 today.
The Tar Heels return to competition April 4-5 in the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational.
