Tar Heels Tie For 3rd At Colonial

North Carolina men's golf tied for third place Tuesday in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational presented by Charles Schwab at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

It is the Tar Heels' fifth top-four finish in the last five years in the prestigious Hogan Collegiate. This year's field included 7 of the top-10 ranked teams in the country and 13 of the top 25, including 14th-ranked UNC.

None of the 16 teams shot below par over 54 holes. Alabama won the team title at even-par 840, five strokes clear of runner-up and top-ranked Auburn. The Tar Heels and Texas Tech shared third place at 12-over 852.

Texas and Vanderbilt tied for fifth and Oklahoma State was seventh.

Senior Niall Sheils Donegan (61-75-75) led the Tar Heels with a ninth-place finish at 1-over-par 211. His 61 in the first round on Monday tied the all-time record at Colonial, was the lowest round since the historic course was renovated two years ago and tied the lowest round ever by a Tar Heel. It was Sheils Donegan's first tournament of the collegiate season and his 10th career top-10 finish.

Freshman Asher Vargas (69-71-73) tied for 16th at 3-over 213, Carson Bertagnole (69-74-72) tied for 22nd at 5-over 215, freshman Preston Hage (73-69-76) tied for 38th at 8-over 218 and Grant Roscich (72-71-77) tied for 51st at 10-over 220.

Texas Tech's Adam Bresnu (69-67-67) was the individual champion, winning by a stroke at 7-under 203.

Carolina returns to action Sunday and Monday, October 4-5, at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic.
Four Tar Heels also competed Monday and Tuesday as individual entries in Greenville, N.C., in ECU's Ironwood Collegiate Classic.
Coltrane Mittage (72-71-68) shot 4-under 68 in the final round to tie for fifth place at 5-under-par 211. Mack Edwards (69-74-72) tied for 18th at 1-under 215, Misha Golod (71-77-70) finished 2-over 218 and Ethan Paschal (69-75-76) was 4-over 220.
