Second Half Flurry Lifts Tar Heels To 5-0 Win Over Saints
August 17, 2025 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina women's soccer (1-1, 0-0 ACC) topped Siena (1-1, 0-0 MAAC) 5-0 in its home opener at Dorrance on Sunday afternoon. Five different Tar Heels netted goals as the team earned their first shutout and win of the season.
Bella Gaetino recorded the first goal of the season early in the first half at 4:26. Both teams' defenses picked up leaving Carolina ahead by just one heading into halftime. UNC kept Siena from attempting a shot in the first while the Saints recorded seven saves.
At the start of the second, Abby Gundry entered the match making her season debut at goalie. Linda Ullmark got the Carolina offense rolling in the second half with a goal assisted by Kate Faasse. Just five minutes later, Shaela Bradley followed up a blocked shot from Olivia Thomas to net the Tar Heels' third goal of the day.
The Saints eventually took their first shot of the game towards the top of the goal, but Gundry stepped up to record a save holding off the Siena attack.
Siena later recorded a foul resulting in a free kick for UNC. In typical Thomas fashion, the forward sent an aggressive shot to the back of the goal to put the Tar Heels ahead by four.
With just eight minutes remaining, freshman Eres Freifeld recorded her first career goal extending Carolina's lead to 5-0.
The Tar Heels' consistent defense and second half offensive spark lead the team to their first shutout victory of the 2025 season.
