November 14, 2025 | Women's Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of North Carolina women's soccer (13-6, 6-4 ACC) opened the 2025 NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 win on the road against No. 3 Tennessee (12-4-3, 6-2-2 SEC). The Tar Heels were led by a brace from Kate Faasse.
Both teams played aggressive defense leaving the match scoreless through the first 26 minutes. Tennessee broke the stalemate with the first goal of the night.
The Tar Heels responded quickly with a goal just three minutes later. Kate Faasse found the ball from touches by Olivia Thomas and Linda Ullmark to record the equalizing goal.
At the 35-minute mark, Tessa Dellarose took the free kick for UNC before the ball bounced around in front of the goal finding the right foot of Caitlin Mara to net the leading goal.
Mara's goal put the Tar Heels ahead 2-1 heading into the break.
In the 57th minute Bella Devey came flying in to steal the ball off a careless pass by Tennessee. Devey dished the ball to Faasse who would put away her second goal of the night to put the Tar Heels ahead by two goals. The forward's second goal marked her fourth brace of the season.
UNC came out hustling on defense leaving the Vols without a shot attempt for over 30 minutes in the second half.
The Vols had good looks down the stretch but the Tar Heel goalkeeper, Hannah Johann, came up with four huge saves at the end to secure a 3-1 win for Carolina.
