6-0 Shutout Secures Baseball Series Over Pitt
April 27, 2025 | Baseball
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Jason DeCaro and Ryan Lynch combined to keep Pittsburgh off the board and North Carolina roll to a 6-0 win to secure their sixth straight ACC series.
Â
The Tar Heels (33-10, 15-9 ACC) took their fourth straight series off the Panthers thanks in large part to some impressive defense that backed up stellar pitching on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Sophomore stud Jason DeCaro carried Carolina to victory on Sunday afternoon with one of his best performances in conference play this season. In throwing 7.0 shutout innings, the young righty logged three strikeouts and only allowed four hits on 91 pitches.
Â
The defense from the Tar Heels was excellent behind him. All three Carolina outfielders made a diving/sliding catch to rob hits and the gloves turned three double plays for the second straight game. The team had only had more than one in a game once prior to the start of this series.
Â
The final two attempts to turn two from the Heels were pretty spectacular. In the bottom of the fifth with the game scoreless and the bases loaded, Tyson Bass hauled in a fly ball in right before sending a perfectly placed laser home to beat AJ Nessler to the plate by a mile. That kept the game tied and allowed Carolina to take the lead in the next half inning.
Â
Jackson Van De Brake supplied the third to end the eighth inning. He smoothly backhanded a hard hit grounder up the middle while sliding to his knees before underhanding the ball to Alex Madera who finished the job. That duo turned five double plays on the weekend while committing no errors.
Â
The offense needed until the sixth frame to get rolling. Kane Kepley smoked his second double of the day to the left center gap before a Luke Stevenson sac fly brought him home to open the scoring.
Â
It was in the seventh when Carolina broke the game wide open. Stevenson popped up again, this time with a bases-loaded RBI single to score Reece Holbrook.
Â
It was fate for the senior Holbrook to score on a day when both teams honored pediatric cancer patients, as the Chapel Hill native has his own success story to share.
Â
Hunter Stokely put then put the game away for Carolina. He followed Stevenson in the seventh with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single of his own that also led to a Pitt error that brought in one more. He then landed the final blow with one more RBI in the ninth.
Â
The Tar Heels will make their way back to Boshamer Stadium for a pair of midweek games against George Mason (4 p.m. ET on Tuesday) and Queens College (6 p.m. ET on Wednesday). Both games will be streamed on ACCNX. Â
