Big Inning Carries Carolina To Win Over George Mason
April 29, 2025 | Baseball
Â
The Tar Heels (34-10, 15-9 ACC) put up their 14th double digit outing of the season thanks to a combination of 15 hits and five errors from George Mason, the most mistakes from a UNC opponent this year. Carolina's speed put pressure on the Patriots throughout, stealing three bags, legging out four doubles, and getting good bunts down.
Â
True freshman Walker McDuffie was given the ball for his first career start and showed once again why he has already earned his coaches' trust. The Lee County legend went a career-long 5.1 near-shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one run (his lone walk of the day).
Â
Classmate Ryan Lynch picked up the win (now 4-0) in relief behind him. Olin Johnson finished off the final 2.0 frames without allowing a run, giving him just three runs in his last 12 appearances (21.1 IP).
Â
Carolina's offense got started through Tyson Bass, who launched a no-doubter over the left field fence for his seventh home run of the season. Alex Madera followed with a walk and was immediately brought around by a Rom Kellis V double. Kellis V had two hits, a run, and an RBI to take advantage of his first time being back in the starting lineup since April 1.
Â
All went quiet on the Carolina front for a few innings, outside of a Kane Kepley RBI double, before the offensive explosion in the seventh inning. In the top half, George Mason scored three on three straight two-out singles to tie the game.
Â
Then the Tar Heels came roaring back. The first UNC batter of the seventh ground out, after that nine straight reached safely to accumulate eight runs. It's tied for the second highest total in a single frame this season for Carolina.
Â
The big action started with a pinch-hit, two RBI double from Sam Angelo. Four consecutive Heels singled after that to plate three more. Then a hard hit Gavin Gallaher grounder forced an error from the Patriots' third baseman that led to two more runs scoring for UNC before Hunter Stokely brought in Gallaher on the very next pitch to complete the damage.
Â
Reece Holbrook would single and make his way around to score on a wild pitch in the eighth to put the final cherry on top of the 13 run outing for the Heels.
Â
The Tar Heels will be back in the Bosh tomorrow for a matchup with Queens with a weekend away from the ACC action on the other side. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. ET and coverage will be on ACCNX. Â
