Strand Wins 5OOOm & Sets Meet Record On Day One Of ACC Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - North Carolina track and field opened day one of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship with an individual title and meet record.
The men's team sits in second with 29 points through four completed events. The women's squad is in eleventh with 7 points through 5 completed events.
Men's Recap:
Ethan Strand (13:26.60) battled with Gary Martin from Virginia in the men's 5000m final lap before hitting a big final kick to win by four seconds, setting the ACC Championship record, winning the ACC Championships for the men's 5000m. Colton Sands (13:39.60) rounded out the podium as he held off the pack to take the final spot.
The men's distance medley relay (9:31.55) race was a photo finish. Parker Wolfe came through in the clutch, pushing his way to the front of the pack on the final lap, as the team earned All-ACC Second-Team honors with the second-place finish, which was .002 seconds behind first place.
Both men's weight throwers had career days as they both advanced to the finals. Tommy Kitchell earned All-ACC Second Team with his fourth-place finish and personal best throw of nearly a meter. Brayden Radhuber (19.11m) had his first career throw over 19 meters.
Women's Recap
Kosi Umerah (20.51m) was the first Tar Heel to score in the ACC Championships on day one. Umerah was named All-ACC Second Team as she finished sixth in the women's weight throw.
Evie Culbreath (3588) kicked off the meet with a bang as she notched the tenth best . She tied her personal best 60m hurdles (5.58) time. The freshman picked up a PR in the high jump (1.61m) and shot put (10.97m).
