Pietramala Leads Men’s Lacrosse Past Stony Brook, 9-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five goals from Dominic Pietralama led the 11th-ranked North Carolina men's lacrosse team (2-0) to a 9-4 win over Stony Brook (1-1) on Friday night at Dorrance Field.

- Unable to convert in the opening frame, Carolina trailed by two at the end of the first quarter after a sluggish start plagued by turnovers from both sides.
- The Tar Heels found their rhythm quickly into the second frame when Ty English cut the deficit in half just 50 seconds in to spark a 4-0 run.
- The next three goals were netted by Pietralama in an eight-minute span for a first-half hat trick, which included the go-ahead goal with 9:02 on the clock.
- The Seawolves responded in the final two minutes to get back within one, but UNC carried a narrow 4-3 lead into the break while dominating faceoffs, 7-2.
- Carolina came into the second half hot, scoring as many goals in the third as they did in the first half while keeping Stony Brook off the board.
- English had the first two of the third quarter to get his first hat trick of the season. Pietralama notched his fourth of the game as Peter Hoffman tacked on another with eight seconds remaining to take an 8-3 lead.
- A quieter fourth quarter saw one goal from both teams. Pietralama tallied his fifth with just over four minutes left in the game off an assist from Owen Duffy.
- The Tar Heels are now 9-0 in the all-time series against the Seawolves.
- Carolina starts 2-0 for the 12th straight season.
- Carolina heads up to Baltimore on Saturday, Feb. 22, to face Johns Hopkins.
- Opening faceoff is slated for noon ET and the game will air on ESPN+.
