Men’s Soccer Bows Out Of ACC Tournament After 2-1 Loss At UVA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – The University of North Carolina men's soccer team put Virginia to the test but a late goal gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 victory, knocking the Tar Heels out of the ACC Tournament. The Heels will await their NCAA Tournament fate when the field is announced on Monday, Nov. 17.
The Heels opened the scoring in the 27th minute through Gabriel Bracken Serra, but UVA equalized in the 36th. Then, in the 78th minute, UVA's Nicholas Simmonds blasted a screamer from outside the box to beat Andrew Cordes and give the Hoos the advantage.
The Tar Heels fell to 9-5-4, while the Cavaliers now sit at 11-1-4.

How It Happened
- 27' – Gabriel Bracken Serra buried one in the bottom right corner off a lovely feed from Nacho Abeal.
- 33' – UVA's Umberto Pel was right on the keeper's toes but headed over.
- 34' – Dan Klink got a shot off but couldn't put it past Casper Mols.
- 36' – UVA got in behind and Triton Beauviois was able to beat Cordes in the right corner.
- 39' – UVA's Nicholas Simmonds skimmed a long-range shot off the top of the crossbar.
- 65' – A real back and forth affair continued but neither team was able to create any real chances through the first part of the second half.
- 70' – A long throw from Riley Berge bounced around in the box, but Andrew Czech's cross was claimed by the keeper.
- 72' – A shot from the top of the box by Luca Nikolai went just wide of the post.
- 78' – UVA's Nicholas Simmonds beat Andrew Cordes with a long-range shot to put the Cavaliers up 2-1.
- 80' – UVA was awarded a penalty but hit the crossbar. The Heels went end to end but Bertil Rygaard Hansen's shot was saved.
Tar Heel Tidbits
- Gabriel Bracken Serra's goal was his fifth of the season and the 18th of his career.
- Nacho Abeal's assist was his ninth of the season and the 14th of his career.
