CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 17 North Carolina bettered Cal in penalties, 4-3, to advance to the second round of the ACC Championship on Wednesday on Dorrance Field at Play2Dream Legacy Stadium. The teams drew 1-1 thanks to a late equalizer from Joschi Schelb and Alan Rutkowski made two saves in the penalty shootout to help the Tar Heels move on.
UNC (8-2-6) will play No. 2 seed Clemson (13-2-2) on Sunday at noon on ACC Network.
Carolina opened on the front foot and put the pressure on Cal. The Heels had several attempts on goal that looked dangerous but they were unable to break through. Cal hit back in the 23rd minute on the counterattack and Malcom Zalayet finished a nice move for the Bears to go up 1-0.
UNC continued to probe throughout the second half and tried to find the equalizer. There were a few half chances until Max Fisher played a beautiful ball down the flank for Bertil Rygaard Hansen to run on to. Rygaard Hansen delivered across the box and Schelb turned and fired with his left foot into the bottom right corner to level. The goal was Schelb's 16th of the season, which ranks second nationally and first in the ACC. He is now tied for fourth on UNC's single-season list and the 16 goals are the most in a season for a Tar Heel since Billy Schuler in 2011.
Carolina pushed in extra time as well and had two to three chances to end the game with a golden goal, but ultimately, the match went to penalties. Luca Nikolai stepped up to start things off and buried his spot kick. Rutkowski put UNC in front by saving Cal's first penalty. Nick Lockermann buried the second and Cal matched, but Rygaard Hansen was saved before Cal tied it at two after three rounds. Both Nico Loebus and Schelb finished their penalties, which set the stage for Rutkowski to end it in the fifth. He dove to his right and kept the ball out to send the Heels to the second round.
