Gymnastics Places Third At Super 16 In 2023 Season Opener

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of North Carolina gymnastics team began the 2023 season by placing third in its quad at the Super 16 presented by Ozone held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Friday afternoon.
The 27th-ranked Tar Heels totaled 194.625 in the season opener, besting Fisk's 186.700 and falling to No. 20 Washington (195.475) and quad champion Southern Utah (195.800). Julia Knower, the reigning WCGA Region Six Gymnast of the Year, kicked off her sophomore season by placing third in the all-around with a cumulative score of 38.825.
Rotation One – Beam
The Tar Heels began the meet on beam, posting a collective score of 48.325 behind All-American Elizabeth Culton's team-high 9.825, which was also the second-highest score of the rotation. Also scoring for Carolina was Knower (9.750), Hannah Nam (9.725), Gwen Fink (9.700) and Bri Greenlow (9.325).
Rotation Two – Floor
Culton again led the way for Carolina on floor, finishing with another second-best mark on an event at 9.875 while freshman Kaya Forbes impressed during her Tar Heel debut with a 9.850. Kate Greene and Cory Shinohara had scores of 9.725 and 9.600, respectively, as Greenlow and Knower both totaled 9.575 in UNC's 48.625. It was the first time Shinohara, a junior, competed on floor during her collegiate career.
Rotation Three – Vault
Forbes continued to impress during her first collegiate meet, as her 9.800 paved the way for Carolina's score of 48.825 on vault, which signaled the second-highest of the four teams after Southern Utah (48.950). A trio of gymnasts in Lali Dekanoidze, Knower and Shinohara tallied 9.775 while Green rounded out the top five at 9.700.
Rotation Four – Bars
Carolina saved its best effort for last by achieving its highest score of the day on bars with a mark of 48.850. Dekanoidze posted the second-best mark of all competitors at 9.850, followed by Isabelle Schaefer who tied for fourth with a 9.825. Fink (9.750), Knower (9.725) and Jamie Shearer (9.700) also contributed to UNC's total, which was the second-highest on the rotation behind Southern Utah (49.050).

The Tar Heels have a quick turnaround, heading back to Chapel Hill to face in-state rival NC State on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. ET inside Carmichael Arena. The meet marks the start of East Atlantic Gymnastics League competition where Carolina was ranked No. 1 during preseason.
Monday's home opener will also serve as UNC's cancer awareness meet, with fans encouraged to donate here. Admission is free and open to the public.
