Tar Heels Tied 5th After 18 Holes
Ryan Gerard tied his season-low round with a 65 and the University of North Carolina is tied for fifth place after Monday's opening 18 holes in the 2022 NCAA Yale Men's Golf Regional in New Haven, Conn.
Â
The top-seeded Tar Heels shot 7-under 273 and are tied with Illinois for the fifth spot in the 14-team field. Wake Forest and North Florida lead at 13 under par, Georgia Southern is third at 10 under and Texas Tech is in fourth at 9 under.
Â
The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins May 27 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Â
Gerard, a fifth-year senior from Raleigh, made six birdies and only one bogey in shooting a 5-under-par 65, which ties the second-best round of his collegiate career. Previously he shot 65 as a sophomore at Notre Dame and earlier this season at The Blessings in Fayetteville, Ark.
Â
Gerard was 4 under on the front nine, made his only bogey of the day on 11, then added birdies on the 14th and 16th holes. It was his team-leading 15th round in the 60s in 31 rounds this season. He is tied for second in the individual standings, one stroke behind Illinois' Piercen Hunt.
Â
Austin Greaser was 4 under over his final seven holes today to finish with a 2-under 68 and freshman David Ford made his NCAA Tournament debut with a 1-under 69.
Â
Ryan Burnett shot 1-over 71 and Peter Fountain had a 72.
Â
Greaser was 2 over par after making a double bogey on the 10th but birdied the 12th and 14th holes and made an eagle three on the 495-yard, par-5 16th hole.
Â
Rounds two and three of the 54-hole event are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday on the par-70, 6,409-yard Yale Golf Course.
