Wiltrout's Record-Breaking Throw Leads UNC On ACC Day 1

DURHAM, N.C. –North Carolina's men and women both sit in second place following Day 1 of competition at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, underway at Duke's Morris Williams Stadium. The Tar Heels earned five medals on Thursday, golds by Jill Shippee (women's hammr) and Madison Wiltrout (women's javelin) and silvers by James Joycey (men's hammer), Anna Keefer (women's long jump) and Alex Ostberg (men's 10,000 meters).

Wiltrout already owned the UNC record in the women's javelin but she bettered it on Friday in emphatic fashion with a throw of 196-11, the 10th-furthest in NCAA history. She also set meet, facility and conference records.
Shippee took gold in the women's hammer for the third time as a Tar Heel, after also winning that event in 2021 and in 2019. She's the first person to win three women's hammer crowns in a row. (The ACC Outdoor Championships weren't held in 2020.)
Joycey opened the day with a silver medal in the men's hammer, improving a spot from last year's bronze. Troy Yearwood placed fifth to give Carolina two in the top five.
Keefer took second in women's long jump, up a spot from 2021. She also placed fourth overall in the 200 meters preliminaries, turning in an all-conditions PR of 23.18 to advance to the final.
In the men's 10K Ostberg placed second in a school-record time of 28:49.36, a personal best. Patrick Anderson placed fourth in 28:54.99, a personal best and the No. 4 time in school history.
In other prelims, Craig Sadder II and Matthew Harris both advanced, placing second and seventh, respectively. Carlie Hansen and Taryn Parks both advanced in the women's 1,500 meters.
