Knower Earns All-Around Title as Carolina Gymnastics Takes Third at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Three Carolina gymnasts claimed individual event titles as the Tar Heels finished third at the Rutgers quad meet with a team score of 194.225. For the second meet in a row, a Carolina freshman took home the all-around title, with Julia Knower claiming her first with a four-event total of 39.200. Freshman Lali Dekanoidze, who came in second in the all-around, took home the vault title with a 9.90, while junior Elizabeth Culton won on bars with a 9.90.
As a team, Carolina had the highest combined vault (48.975) and uneven bars scores (48.500), posting five scores 9.80 and above between the two apparatuses.
NC State took home the meet victory with a 195.125 team score, while host Rutgers finished a spot behind the meet with a 194.550. New Hampshire ended the meet in fourth place with a 193.625.
The Tar Heels had a slow start to the meet on floor, having to count a fall. Knower had Carolina's top score with a career-best 9.800.
Vault was highlighted by Dekanoidze's 9.90. Junior Julianna Weil set a career-record with a 9.750, while sophomore Kate Greene competed in her first vault lineup.
On the uneven bars, Culton was just shy of her career-best with a 9.90. Carolina wrapped up the meet on beam, where Culton posted another team-best of 9.90.
Up next, the Tar Heels will return home for a quad meet with Missouri, Brown and George Washington in Carmichael Arena on Jan. 22.
