Tar Heels Set To Kick Off NCAA Championships in Eugene Wednesday

EUGENE, Ore. - The five North Carolina qualifiers for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will compete at the University of Oregon's Historic Hayward Field beginning Wednesday, June 6 through Saturday, June 9.
Competition at the NCAA Championships begins Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. PT, and senior Kenny Selmon is set to be Carolina's first performer of the week in the men's 400-meter hurdles (6:30 p.m. PT) later that evening. In order to advance to the event finals, the three-time All-America and 2018 USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year must either finish among the top two in his heat or finish with one of the next two best times. He currently holds the top time of the season in his heat and the second-best time across all competitors. If Selmon qualifies for the final round, he will return to the track on Friday, June 8 at 6:57 p.m. PT in hopes of capturing the national title.
Thursday is packed with Tar Heels in action as three of the five qualifiers look to cap their 2018 seasons. Making their first appearances in Eugene, freshman Jill Shippee heads out the throwing circle in the women's hammer throw (1:30 p.m. PT) and freshman Anna Keefer will compete in the finals of the women's long jump (5:30 p.m.). Representing UNC on the track, senior Caroline Alcorta will complete the day in the women's 10,000 meters (6:38 p.m.).
As Carolina's fifth and final competitor, junior Morgan Isle will also make her championship debut in the women's 5000 meters (5:25 p.m. PT) on Saturday.

Selmon, a senior from Mableton, Ga., is a three-time All-America performer in the 400-meter hurdles and a back-to-back ACC champion in the event. At last year's NCAA Championships, he took fourth with a school-record time of 48.60. Selmon is ranked first in the east and second in the country at 48.98, and he was recently named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year. He heads into the semifinals undefeated on the season.

Alcorta, a senior from Springfield, Va., is making her first trip to NCAA Outdoor Championships. She ran 33:58.22 in the 10,000 meters, finishing third at the NCAA East Preliminary round, just four seconds slower than her personal-best at the Raleigh Relays on March 30. She holds the second-best time in UNC history in the event, an accomplishment she earned in her first ever appearance in the 10,000 meters.

Morgan Ilse – 5,000 meters
Ilse, a junior from Dunwoody, Ga., is making her first NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship appearance. She will compete in the 5,000 meters after earning the final qualifying spot from the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Ilse holds UNC's school record in the indoor 5,000 meters.

Anna Keefer – Long Jump
Keefer, a freshman from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., jumped a lifetime-best 20-9 (6.32 meters) in the long jump at the Battle of the Blues on April 6. She won the indoor ACC title in the event and earned second-team honors in the long jump at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Keefer is set to compete as the eighth athlete in the second of two flights on Thursday after claiming the 11th spot out of the East.

She took fourth in the event at the ACC Outdoor Championships and she is scheduled to compete fifth in the second of two flights on Thursday. She took fifth in the competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
