CLEMSON, S.C. - The North Carolina track and field teams travel to Clemson, S.C. for the Bob Pollock Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 26-27), hosted in the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex. Friday's action begins at 2:30 p.m., with competition resuming on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
In addition to the Tar Heels, the two-day meet features Alabama (#5 Men, #14 Women), Auburn, Clemson, Georgia Tech, J.C. Smith, NC State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee (#16 Women) and Virginia Tech (#12 Men).
"Each meet has progressively gotten a little bit tougher," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "I really don't have to tell them much when they can look at the teams entered to compete this week, with several members from the SEC and a couple of members from the ACC that we haven't seen yet. It really is the toughest meet of the season, but each week our kids have answered the bell and performed at a higher level."
This is the second of four trips Carolina makes this season to the site of the 2018 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships On Jan. 19-20, Nicole Greene, Draven Crist and Will Eskew competed in the Clemson Invitational; the Tar Heels will return for the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 9-10, and the ACC Championships will take place Feb. 22-24.
Last weekend, several Tar Heels turned in impressive early-season performances as Carolina spit the weekend at the Notre Dame and Clemson Invitationals. Freshman Anna Keefer and junior Zay Paschall swept the triple jump, with Keefer's jump of 19-11 ¾ (6.09 meters) leading the ACC. Senior Caroline Alcorta (Mile), redshirt-freshman Alex Cooke (weight throw) and the two 4x400 squads finished with times/marks that rank in the top three in the ACC. Senior Natisha Dixon and redshirt-freshman Marcus Krah also swept the hurdle events for the Tar Heels.
Entering this weekend's meet, Carolina owns a combined eight top-three times/marks in the ACC and a combined 12 top-50 bests in the NCAA.
"I think they are enjoying the moderate success we've had so far," Meaders said. "They continue to push each other to elevate performances across the men's team, the women's team and all of the disciplines. They're starting to feed off of each other."
