CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—Gab Major tied a University of North Carolina program record with five goals in a driving rainstorm on Friday, leading the third-ranked Tar Heels to an 8-3 win at fourth-ranked Virginia. Major added an assist as Carolina posted its sixth consecutive victory.

The Tar Heels improve to 10-1 overall, 3-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play this fall. UVA falls to 8-2, 2-2.

Nina Notman opened the scoring in the seventh minute for Carolina, scoring off a penalty corner with assists to Major and Emily Wold. Virginia tied the contest less than 10 minutes later when Riley Tata scored.

The Tar Heels then ripped off a 7-0 scoring run to take command while holdng the Cavaliers scoreless for over 50 minutes of play. Major scored all five of her goals during the 7-0 run, including the first two goals, three of the first four and both of the last two.

After Carolina had built an 8-1 lead after Major's fifth goal at the 66:16 mark, Virginia scored two late goals to make the final score 8-3.

Shannon Johnson (10-1) started in goal and picked up the win for the Tar Heels, making four saves while allowing two goals in 68:02 of action. Mary Kathryn Harrah played the final 1:58 for UNC in goal. Carolina forced UVA starter Rebecca Holden (5-2) from the game in the 38th minute after she allowed three goals. UNC scored five times against Virginia's Carrera Lucas.

Carolina will return to action on next Friday, Oct. 9, when it hosts Longwood at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels have ACC games remaining against Duke (Oct. 16) and at Wake Forest (Oct. 23) in the regular season.
