Complete Effort Helps Field Hockey To 4-0 Win Over Boston College
October 16, 2026 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In their first game back home in nearly a month, Carolina field hockey returned to dominant form with a 4-0 victory over Boston College on Friday night in Karen Shelton Stadium.
Â
The Tar Heels (8-5, 4-1 ACC) controlled the contest from start to finish as they outshot the Eagles 20-to-4 and got goals from four different players to pick up their fourth conference win of the season. Carolina has now claimed 13 straight against Boston College.
Â
"This team plays best when they are playing decisively and they're playing simply and that's what they did tonight," Carolina head coach Erin Matson said after the game. "We did a good job defensively with the press and then channeling that energy into our attack. Really proud of them and great to get a win back home."
Â
Matson saw her team bounce back from Sunday's loss at Liberty with a return to the form they'd shown the four games prior. The defense was suffocating and allowed the attack to flourish their way into the game.
Â
A usual suspect opened the scoring as senior forward Charly Bruder finished off a full-field move for the Tar Heels by sneaking a well placed ball through the legs of BC's Charlotte Kramer. It's the 13th of the year for Bruder who has moved into the top-5 all time in career goals for Carolina at 73.
Â
The second score of the evening came just after halftime, this time it was Ella Barbacci adding to her tally in an impressive senior season. Yet another quick transition from defense to offense for the Heels left the Eagles scrambling at the back. A foul in their defensive end gave Carolina the ball back and then it was off to the races for Ryleigh Heck who laid a pass off to Reese Anetsberger who drew the Boston College back line before finding Barbacci unmarked in front of goal.
Â
"Reese continues to create a lot," Matson said of Anetsberger. "She's not getting rewarded on the stat sheet every game with goals of her own, but she is creating so much offense for this team."
Â
Heck herself was next to get on the scoresheet, drawing a penalty stroke and putting it away easily to the bottom left corner of the cage. The reigning All-American is just behind Bruder on the all-time goals list in sixth with 71.
Â
The final strike was made by Dani Mendez for her first of the year. The midfielder trailed only Heck in points scored last season but had not yet gotten a goal since taking the field in 2026. After the game, she described it was a "getting the monkey off your back" moment.
Â
Star goalkeeper Merritt Skubisz had little to do on the night, but effectively snuffed out any look Boston College got at her goal. She made three saves in picking up her fifth shutout of the season.
Â
The Tar Heels make a quick return to Karen Shelton Stadium on Sunday afternoon when they square off against No. 13 Syracuse. Game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. ET with coverage coming on ACC Network.
