CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team got six goals from true freshmen, including a hat trick from Eva van't Hoog, and gained significant experience for its bench players Friday in earning its seventh consecutive win, 8-1 over visiting Longwood at Francis E. Henry Stadium.

The Tar Heels improved to 11-1 overall and reached the eight-goals mark for the third game in a row. The Lancers fell to 4-7 on the season.

Van't Hoog scored the gamewinner in the fifth minute of play on a pass from classmate Malin Evert. The second UNC goal, in the ninth minute, came from another freshman, Austyn Cuneo. After the Longwood keeper saved a shot by van't Hoog, Cuneo gathered the loose ball and shot it in from the left side of the cage.

Van't Hoog's second goal, in the 11th minute, was assisted by sophomore Sam Night and made the score 3-0. Night sent a ball from the baseline out to the front of the cage, where van't Hoog sent into the top of the net.

Night scored the next goal, on a pass from senior Emily Wold, the Tar Heels' assist leader. The goal, which came from the front of the cage, was Night's first of the season. The assist was the 49th of Wold's career and put her alone in third place on the Tar Heels' all-time assists chart.

Wold also assisted on the next goal, sending a perfect pass to set up Evert in front of the goal, making the score 5-0 in the 30th minute. The Tar Heels then added two more before halftime, with van't Hoog scoring her third and Cuneo her second, the last on a penalty corner assisted by junior Julia Young.

“I'm happy for the team,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “It's good to get a lot of goals early in the game. And it's nice to see Eva get her first career hat trick.”

Only three starters saw playing time after halftime. Goalkeeper Shannon Johnson started the second half but was subbed out for freshman Mary Kathryn Harrah with 31:40 remaining. Young and freshman Ashley Hoffman switched off on the back line in the second half, but otherwise every player on the field was a non-starter gaining significant playing time.

One of them, junior Rachel Black, provided the team's eighth goal in the 44th minute when she stole the ball from a defender, carried it into the circle and sent a shot past keeper Lauren Bernard, who was subbed out for Katie Wyman at that point.

“I thought Rachel Black played very well and I was proud of her goal, the way she stole the ball and took it in,” Shelton said. “I also thought Caroline Plyler showed maturity out there.”

Longwood's goal came in the 54th minute and was the first that UNC has given up at home this season. On a penalty corner, one of two the Lancers drew in the second half and four for the game, Harrah saved the first Longwood shot but Kate Colley dived to tip the rebound in from the right side and make the score 8-1.

For the game, UNC outshot the visitors 29-9, including 26-2 in the first half. The Tar Heels drew eight penalty corners.

Next up for UNC is a return to Atlantic Coast Conference play when the Tar Heels host No. 4 Duke on Friday at 6 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
