Valimaa Scores Twice In 2-0 Win Over BC
October 25, 2014 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (11-4, 5-2 ACC) won its sixth-straight match, and in the process, senior keeper Brendan Moore notched his fifth-consecutive clean sheet and ninth of the season in the victory.
Valimaa was inserted into the match at the 30:27 mark of the first half, and that decision paid immediate dividends when he scored 59 seconds later for a 1-0 Tar Heel lead.
Defender Walker Hume took the initial shot that was saved by BC keeper Alex Kapp, but Valimaa was in position to pounce on the rebound for his third goal of 2014.
Moore made two saves late in the first half to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
The second stanza proved to be a one-sided affair with Carolina coming up with seven of the eights shots during the final 45 minutes of the match.
Kapp made four saves on the first six shots of the second half by UNC, but could not stop the final attempt of the evening when Valimaa collected a pass from Andy Craven and deposited his shot from 10 yards into the back of the net in the 90th minute.
Boston College falls to 5-6-3 and 1-5-1 in the ACC.
Carolina held a 15-4 shot advantage, while the Eagles enjoyed a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Moore made three saves to extend his scoreless streak to 516:41 since allowing his last goal on Oct. 3 against Clemson.
North Carolina returns home for two games this coming week. The Tar Heels will host Georgia Southern on Tuesday at 7 p.m., on GoHeelsTV.
The regular season finale then comes Saturday against Virginia at 7 p.m., on ESPN3. UNC will honor its seniors before the match against the Cavaliers.
