North Carolina Postgame Quotes
Virginia vs. North Carolina
2012 ACC Championship April 21, 2012 Koskinen Stadium Durham, N.C.
Head Coach Jenny Levy:
On the start of the second half:
"Well I just felt like first half we created a lot of turnovers and did some really nice things in transition, we just weren't connecting. We were impatient. We were just forcing things and we were a little anxious, didn't' get into a nice rhythm. It wasn't from a lack of possessions I just thought we were a little hurried and at halftime the adjustment we made was to just slow down, have more patience, let's not try to have 20-second possessions, let's really get control of what we want to do and be patient and with the defense."
On Kara Cannizzaro's effort and performance:
"I think Kara's effort today was a key to our success in the second half. There was a play when she caused a turnover on the defensive end and Kelly picked up the groundball and they came down then she ended up scoring the goal. I thought that was a big momentum swing. Anytime you have that type of effort on both ends of the ball with our midfielders I think it really spurs our team. I got it from Kara today, I got it from Emily Garrity today, I thought Jess Griffin had a nice game, I thought they all did really well. Kara's one of our leaders and I just thought she was brilliant."
On coming off of a loss before the tournament:
"You never want to take a loss but I think if you can, on the back side of that loss, help your team get better from it--we have something called "tell the truth Mondays" and it's a tough film session and what went well and what needs work and we all agree in that room that it's nothing personal but we need to look at it, we need to evaluate it and we need to get better from it. That's been our goal all season is to get better everyday. We walked away from Northwestern disappointed and they're obviously a great opponent, they're having a great year but we didn't play our best in the second half and I think a little bit into the first half today and finally we shook whatever was over us, we shook it and the players felt it. We're excited about that, to get back to how we want to play. We certainly didn't have that in the second half of the Northwestern game. If we can use losses to get better, it's key."
Becky Lynch:
On if it was frustrating when Virginia held the ball to close out the first half:
"I guess it is a little frustrating. Our defense does such a good job of holding them that if you have confidence in them that they're going to hold them then they can hold it as long as they want. It was tied at that point so we knew we had the whole second half ahead of us. I mean I guess it's frustrating but I wouldn't say it was really a game changer."
On if they expected to break it open or if they expected a down-to-the-wire game:
"In the second half we focused more on waiting for opportunities to come to us a little bit more than forcing it. I think that was the main change where rather than try to force it and getting a little anxious when things opened a little bit, we were waiting for the layup to be there. I think then it just opened up and we started to get into our groove."
On what specifically worked on offense in those first few minutes of the second half:
"We really felt connected and when you feel connected with everybody on the field and you just have confidence that if you give somebody a pass they're going to do the next, right move with it that was really the difference. We weren't rushed at all and when things started falling it was a major confidence boost. Something that we always knew was there."
On preference for the next game's opponent:
"I like both teams. I think it's fun, they're both in the ACC and they're both really good so any game is going to be a lot of fun Monday."
Kara Cannizzaro:
On the first half defensive performance:
"I think anytime you can hold a team to two goals you really have confidence in your defense. Our back line was really good when we weren't producing in the first half and I think we went into the locker room and we all collectively made a decision to come out and finish and take the right shots and not force anything."
On pressure coming into the tournament:
"Something that we talk about a lot on our team is grit. People are going to put a target on your back and people are going to want to beat you. I think our team practices all week knowing that and we practice hard and we're not focused on results at all so we just go out and want to play the best lacrosse we can. It's not really about results."
Virginia Head Coach Julie Myers:
On their overall performance:
"I think in the first half we did a great job. We didn't make many mistakes. We didn't give Carolina that many easy opportunities to fast break and get things going. Second half, we just had some unforced errors, some not great shot selection, not great shot placement and some balls that we just threw away and it gave Carolina chances. I give them a whole lot of credit for capitalizing on those mistakes and I think it just got under our skin and more mistakes followed."
On their game plan and controlling tempo:
"That's always what we're trying to do. We try to win draws. We try to control the tempo especially when we know that the team that we're playing is so good in transition and is so fast and powerful offensively. We would love to control it. We had our chances. We just had a couple mindless moments and our execution was off. Our heart and our desire was there, we just didn't' match it with our sticks today."
