"This five game stretch early in the season has been good for us to get the kinks out and see what we need to work on," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said after the victory. "We are looking forward to working on some things this week in practice before we play a very good Penn team next weekend. I was pleased with our effort for the most part today."
Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game on free position goals by Zimmerman, Taylor and Donohoe. UF's Bruns scored unassisted at the 15:10 mark to cut the UNC lead to 3-1. Carolina responded with three consecutive goals by Canizzaro, Russell and Bosica to take a 6-1 lead.
The Gators scored three goals in the final 2:23 of the first half to cut the margin to 6-4 at halftime.
Carolina scored the first six goals coming out of the lockerroom at halftime to seize the momentum from the Gators and put the game essentially out of reach by grabbing a 12-4 lead. Six different Tar Heels scored during the 6-0 run in the span of 15:25. After Rhea scored Florida's only second half goal to make it 12-5 with 12:35 left to play, UNC scored six straight goals again for the final 18-5 margin.
The Tar Heels outshot Florida 36-17 and had 29 ground balls to the Gators' 13. Carolina connected on 9 of 13 free position attempts while UF was just 1 for 3 from the eight-meter arc. Florida also committed 23 turnovers to UNC's 13 in the game.
