CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Christine Vaughen cranked 15 kills to lead North Carolina over Clemson in straight sets (27-25, 25-18, 25-20) Friday evening at Carmichael Arena. Sophomores Cora Harms and Emily McGee each notched double-doubles as UNC improved to 22-9 overall and 13-5 ACC.
Vaughen led all scorers with 15 kils. McGee added 10 kills and 18 digs, good for her 11th double-double in 2010. Seniors Courtney Johnston and Suzanne Haydel combined for 16 kills. Heather Henry chipped in seven kills off the bench.
"I thought we had a great comeback in the first set and carried that over to the rest of the match," exclaimed head coach Joe Sagula. "Clemson is a terrific blocking team and had 20 blocks last time we played them. We scored some points with some off-speed offense tonight."
Defensively ACC's leading libero Kaylie Gibson reeled in a game-high 22 digs. Harms added 31 assists and 10 digs for her team-leading 15th double-double of the year. Erica Behm added 17 assists.
UNC closed the first frame on an 8-2 run to claim set one 27-25. The Tar Heels got a big boost off the bench from Henry providing a pair of kills. Gibson highlighted the late Carolina run flying into the left side of the court to keep the ball alive leading to UNC's first lead of the match at 24-23. The Tar Heels found offense from middle hitters Bleke and Vaughen, who combined for nine of UNC's 21 kills.
Vaughen continued her success uncorking six kills to lead UNC to a 25-18 set two win. The Tar Heels cranked a .366 hitting percentage and never trailed in set two. Johnston and McGee combined for nine kills to give Carolina a 2-0 match lead over the Tigers.
The competitive third set featured seven tie scores and three lead changes before UNC claimed the frame 25-20. Henry, Vaughen and Haydel each ripped four kills as Carolina earned the 3-0 sweep. With the score knotted at 16, the Tar Heels found some breathing room after a pair of attack errors and a big McGee serve ace.
The win marks the 13th of the year for Carolina in Carmichael. The 13-2 mark is the best record at home since a perfect 18-0 mark in 2002.
Carolina returns to action Sunday hosting Georgia Tech at noon Sunday for senior day from Carmichael.
