Tar Heels Fall To Duke 3-0

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke defeated North Carolina in straight sets (20-25, 12-25, 15-25) Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The loss drops Carolina to 15-5 and 6-1 in the ACC as Duke improves to 14-2 and 6-0 in the league.
Cora Harms led UNC with 15 assists and 12 digs, good for her team-leading ninth double-double. Courtney Johnston added eight kills and Emily McGee chipped in seven.
"We are very disappointed in our performance tonight," said head coach Joe Sagula "We were not sharp in any facet of the game. Give credit to Duke they were well-prepared."
The Blue Devils hurried out to a quick 7-0 lead forcing a Tar Heel timeout. Carolina crawled back to knot the score twice late in the set, but fell short as Duke claimed set one 25-20. The Blue Devils registered a .326 hitting percentage committing just two attack errors. Christine Vaughen notched four kills in the opening frame to lead the Tar Heels.
Duke handed the Tar Heels a 25-12 defeat in the second set to own a 2-0 match advantage. The Blue Devils carried their momentum into the second frame flashing out to a 10-4 score with seven kills to zero attack errors. The Blue Devils turned in their first attack error at 22-10 and boasted a .500 hitting percentage in the second set. Carolina was plagued by a pair of serve errors and just a .174 hitting percentage.
Carolina gained their first lead of the match with a 2-1 advantage in the third frame. The lead was short-lived as Duke fired back jumping in front 17-9. Carolina limited the Blue Devils to a .212 hitting percentage, but turned in a negative .062 clip. Duke earned the third set win 25-16 and match 3-0.
The loss snaps Carolina's 11 match win streak and is the Tar Heels first loss since Sept. 10.
Carolina returns to action next Friday traveling to Georgia Tech and Saturday with a visit to Clemson.
