ATLANTA, GA. -- In a match that featured 34 tie scores and 11 lead changes, Georgia Tech edged North Carolina 3-1 (25-27, 26-24, 22-25, 23-25) Friday night at O'Keefe Gym. Kaylie Gibson reeled in 20 digs as the Tar Heels fall to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in ACC play.
Courtney Johnston led the UNC attack with 15 kills. Emily McGee added 13 kills and eight digs and Christine Vaughen chipped in 10 kills. Cora Harms fueled the Tar Heel attack with 30 assists. The Yellow Jackets out-blocked the Tar Heels 17 to four.
"I am disappointed because we had a ton of opportunities tonight," said head coach Joe Sagula. "We led in every set, but Georgia Tech took advantage of those opportunities."
Erica Behm notched her fifth double-double of the season reeling in 11 digs and sporting 15 assists. Heather Henry and Suzanne Haydel combined for 14 kills.
Georgia Tech rallied to take the first frame 27-25 behind seven Monique Mead kills. The Tar Heels led by as many as five at 21-16, but the Yellow Jackets answered back to even the score at 23 apiece. McGee collected five kills in the opening frame to lead UNC, but the Tar Heels managed just a .179 hitting percentage.
Carolina trailed just once in the second frame to win the set 26-24. The Tar Heels limited the Yellow Jackets to just a .077 hitting percentage behind 30 team digs. Behm notched nine digs and Haydel uncorked four kills to no errors to lead UNC. All square after two frames, the first two sets featured 15 tie scores and five lead changes.
Georgia Tech used a 9-2 run to claim set three 25-22 and own a 2-1 match advantage. Trailing by four, the Yellow Jackets stormed back to gain the lead at 22-21, their first since an 8-7 advantage. Tech ripped a match-best .355 hitting percentage in the third. Johnston and Vaughen combined for seven Tar Heel kills.
Carolina's late comeback bid fell short as Georgia Tech captured the fourth frame 25-22 and match 3-1. The Tar Heels scored four straight points behind Harms' serves to knot the score at 20, but the Yellow Jackets held on for the set win. Both squads turned in sun-.140 hitting percentages, but Tech continued to out-block the Tar Heels en route to their fifth straight win.
Carolina concludes weekend play challenging Clemson Saturday at Jervey Gym at 6 p.m.
